FALKLAND THRUSH Turdus falcklandii

Falklands 'Thrush'. Resident breeder. A plump bird, length: 25- 26 cm ( 10 - 10.5 inches), found around all settlements. Males and females are plain brown but male has a black crown. Juveniles are flecked with buff on their backs and have buff underparts heavily spotted with dark brown. Thrushes have a varied diet of earthworms, insect larvae and pupae, also sandhoppers, and berries in season particularly Pig-vine. They will also take domestic scraps.

Thrushes are widespread throughout the Falklands but do better on islands free of predators. It favours inland crags, rocky coasts and areas of human settlement.

T.f. falcklandii is restricted to the Falklands but there is a smaller race T.f. magellanicus found in neighbouring southern South America, Tierra del Fuego, Staten Is., and the Beagle Channel islands.
